Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)
What is Guided Biofilm Therapy?
Guided Biofilm Therapy is a new approach to dental cleaning here at Harrogate Dental & Implant Clinic. Our hygienists use a modern 8 step protocol to provide a comfortable, pain-free, and effective way to achieve and maintain a healthy smile.
What is Dental Biofilm and its role in Gum Disease?
Dental disease occurs when plaque bacteria, also known as dental biofilm, is left to mature on teeth. It likes to breed in dark, warm, moist areas like those found under the gums and between the teeth. It is imperative that dental biofilm is regularly disrupted from these difficult-to-reach areas to prevent it from attacking the teeth and initiating the inflammatory process that causes gum disease.
How Guided Biofilm Therapy Works
Following an initial assessment, Guided Biofilm Therapy uses a vegetable based dye to highlight the biofilm and make it visible to the naked eye. Once visible, it can be removed thoroughly and you will be shown techniques to prevent further build-up. One of the most significant advantages of GBT is its gentle nature. Unlike traditional cleanings that rely on scraping and polishing, GBT utilises specially designed tools including warm water Airflow®, soft anti-microbial powder and no-pain ultrasonics to gently remove biofilm, calculus and stains from your teeth. The procedure is designed to be non-invasive with minimal noise, ensuring your comfort throughout the process. Whether you have sensitive teeth, gum recession or dental phobia, GBT offers a stress-free, painless solution tailored to your needs.
By thoroughly removing biofilm, GBT significantly reduces your risk of developing dental infections, cavities, and gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. This not only promotes a healthier smile but also contributes to your overall well-being. Research has shown that poor oral health can contribute to various systemic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and vascular dementia. By eliminating harmful bacteria and reducing the risk of oral infections, GBT plays a crucial role in supporting your overall health.
